Indoor-Outdoor, East-Coast Style
Los Angeles architectural firm Marmol Radziner designed this weekend home for Nick and Sole Riley. The couple wanted a covered outdoor dining space and grill adjacent to the kitchen; there are heat lamps in the ceiling to allow alfresco dining "well into October. We spend 70 percent of our time there," Sole says. In the summer it offers a shady spot overlooking the pool with chaise lounges perfect for entertaining.

The Living Room
The nearly 10,000-square-foot house is long an narrow, designed to let in lots of light. Low-slung Italian furniture covered in monochromatic upholstery and contemporary artworks, such as an Oona Ratcliffe diptych, fill the living room. "Generally, we don't like bright colors in decorating," Sole says. She also designed the walnut coffee table.

The Kitchen
Sole is an avid cook, and the windowsill of her spacious kitchen holds eggs from the heirloom-breed chickens she raises; they roam the lawns at will, and Sole indulges them like a mother hen. "I never use chemicals anywhere on the property," she says.

The Library
The sunken library—cavelike and cozy—is lined with custom walnut cabinetry, and a ribbonlike window above the banquette offers a glimpse of the reflecting pool just outside.

The Owners Outside Their Home
Nick and Sole Riley were involved in the design of the house from the very beginning.

A Modern Facade
"It's much more than a summer house, or even a weekend house" says Nick Riley. "It's a place that feels equally good in the snow." Indeed, the openness of the house and multiple windows guarantees a beautiful view even in the dead of winter.

A Corner of the Living Room
In the living room a tall window and hallway offer views beyond and through the house. "We tend to do houses that are long and thin," says Ron Radziner, a founder of architectural firm Marmol Radziner along with Leo Marmol. "More surface area equals more light and views and also gives you long views within the house. No room is isolated from its surroundings."

The Game Room
The painting, by Gonzalo Papantonakis, is based on an aerial view of Los Angeles and looks over the focus of the game room: a James Perse ping-pong table. The partnership between the Rileys and Marmol Radziner was so successful that they are now at work on another house in Telluride.

Heath Tiles in the Spa
The green tiles in the spa showers are the main feature against the neutral wall color and flooring. Marmol Radziner is known for casually glamorous California-tinged residential projects and commercial commissions—including stores for fashion designer James Perse and the eyewear brand Oliver Peoples—and for newsworthy restorations of landmark 20th-century houses, such as Richard Neutra's Kaufmann house in Palm Springs.
